The story

Teo guides anglers on the North Carolina side of the park and knows Clingmans Dome Road the way most people know their own driveway: which pullout fits two cars, where the fog sits in the morning, where the bears like to cross. He met Wren on a training day when she came off the trail at Collins Gap with empty bottles and a long way still to go. He filled them from the jug in his truck and told her she was crazy. She said she knew. He asked when she was doing it for real.

His stops are the quick ones. Indian Gap and Collins Gap are bottle swaps and a gel bag, in and out, no chair, no sitting down. Then he parks at the Kuwohi lot and walks the paved path to the top with the night bag: headlamp, spare batteries, a warm layer, and the jacket she will want at dusk and swear she does not need.

Teo checks her in from his phone at every stop, so June can see from the kitchen table exactly where her sister is. He lost his own father a long time ago, before there was anything like this. He says he is not crewing for a record. He is crewing for the walkway.
