The story
Ash met Wren on the first day of high school cross country, when they were both last up the hill and decided together to stop pretending otherwise. Ash quit running after graduation and became an emergency room nurse. Wren kept going. They never lost each other.
When Dale got sick, Ash was the one who sat at the kitchen table and explained the words the doctors used, slowly, twice, until June stopped crying. When Wren said she wanted to run the whole Smokies in a day, Ash did not ask why. Ash asked where the crew could park.
On the day, Ash is the crew lead. That means the plan, the cooler and the phone. Every arrival and every departure goes into HardTracks from the parking lot, so the arrival times at the next stops update for the crew and for everyone following at home. Ash has one rule at Newfound Gap: nobody says the word record. Shoes, socks, food, headlamp, out.
After Kuwohi there is no crew for thirty two miles. Ash will drive the long way round to Fontana Dam and stand next to Dale on the walkway, watching the dark ridge for a headlamp.
